Late "catch-up" growth after severe infantile malnutrition.

چکیده
Prolonged observations of children severely malnourished in early life suggested that permanent stunting in body length and head size resulted (1, 2). Studies with small laboratory animals lent support to these observations (3). Besides the obvious species differences, there were other important distinctions between the two types of studies. Whereas the experimental animals after the early insult received an optimum diet, the children, almost without exception, continued to live in the same environment in which they had become severely malnourished originally. This makes it impossible to distinguish between the late effects of early malnutrition and the effect of life-long existence in the conditions of extreme proverty, where adequate nutrition is most unlikely.

Ready to Use Therapeutic Food(RUTF) in the management of severe acute malnutrition in India.
Home-based management has many advantages as the children have reduced exposure to hospitalacquired infections and receive continuity of care after discharge. It also benefits by increasing the time available to mothers to spend with family and reduces the risk of possible neglect of siblings. Also, mothers are able to look after other family responsibilities simultaneously(1,2). An essential c...
متن کاملMalnutrition and Catch-Up Growth during Childhood and Puberty.
This chapter reviews important recent papers related to catch-up growth. Catch-up growth is generally defined as body growth that (1) is more rapid than normal for age and (2) follows a period of growth inhibition. As can be seen by the studies reviewed in this chapter, catch-up growth can occur after either preor postnatal growth inhibition, can show a variety of temporal patterns, and can be ...
متن کاملDietary supplementation and rapid catch-up growth after acute diarrhoea in childhood.
Diarrhoea is a major cause of short-term growth faltering in children of the developing world. If catch-up weight gain is delayed by inadequate dietary intake, or by further bouts of diarrhoea, progressive growth failure occurs. To test the hypothesis that early refeeding is as effective as later feeding after acute diarrhoea with weight loss, we measured the effects of a timed dietary interven...
متن کاملIs Early Puberty Triggered by Catch-Up Growth Following Undernutrition?
Undernutrition during fetal and postnatal life is still a major problem in many low- and middle-income countries. Even in high-income countries malnutrition may exist in cases of intrauterine growth retardation, as well as in chronic conditions such as anorexia nervosa and inflammatory bowel disease. Children adopted from developing countries are often chronically malnourished. Nutritional reha...
متن کاملTyrosine requirement during the rapid catch-up growth phase of recovery from severe childhood undernutrition.
The requirement for aromatic amino acids during the rapid catch-up in weight phase of recovery from severe childhood undernutrition (SCU) is not clearly established. As a first step, the present study aimed to estimate the tyrosine requirement of children with SCU during the catch-up growth phase of nutritional rehabilitation using a diet enriched in energy and proteins. Tyrosine requirement wa...
